Well, our first apartment turned out to be about like most newlywed couples first apartments, except probably worse. We lived in a basement apartment on 1st north and 3rd west in Logan from the time we got married until Halloween. Finding a place that allows pets in Logan is really difficult! We had planned on having Snoop come live with us, and leaving Sammy at Brigham's parents house, so we had very few options of places to live and were running out of time! We finally decided to just go ahead and rent this apartment, without really knowing how gross it really was. We quickly established a "how bout lets wear our shoes in the house at all times" rule when the first time we vacuumed we discovered that we were vacuuming up mass quantities of tiny pebbles that turned out to be kitty littler. SICK! That cat really must have had some issues, because the kitty littler was EVERYWHERE! To go along with that, we had some MAJOR plumbing problems, and once had to go stay up at Brigham's parent's house for a week until they fixed it (which was an ordeal all in itself because the landlord lives in California and the people who manage the property in Logan didn't care at all what was going on). Then there was the scariest place on earth, aka, the laundry room (image below, be prepared!). But, we made do with what we had, and besides having to wear our shoes all the time, which was not comfortable and resulted in lots of stinky feet, it wasn't quite as bad as we make it sound (at least to me it wasn't, if you ask Brig he'll tell you differently). It eventually got to the point where we couldn't really take it anymore. We moved very suddenly up to Brigham's parents house where we now live in a bedroom in the basement. We moved so suddenly that we were packing and moving at the same time. I would pack a box and Brig would take it. We moved everything in about 2 days. It's nice to be in a clean place!
This is our living room, hurray! Don't worry, it wasn't like this for long. I was totally overwhelmed with having to put so much stuff away and luckily my mom came and helped us! This is obviously BEFORE we put stuff away, just so you know.

Here is the living room right before we moved. I broke my collar bone in the summer and then started school and was too busy (and poor) to really decorate, but at least it's clean, haha! Dustin and Heather were nice enough to let us take their old couch, and Mick and Becki gave us that really nice table! It's an oldie, but a goodie. The only problem was it wouldn't fit in our kitchen and I refused to use a card table (Just because we had another option). So it sat in our living room and collected junk very frequently.

This is just another "before clean up" picture.

This is our little decorated corner. My mom bought us that cute frame that I loved! Never had enough time to put pictures in it though, ha.

My mom and dad gave me this super cute key holder thing and I love it. I have it hanging up in our room at Mick and Becki's because I like it so much!
900 year old TV... My favorite.

This is an interesting turn of events! This picture is actually our storage room BEFORE we got everything "put away." And P.S. part of the reason that this apartment cost as much as it did was because they classified it as a "two bedroom apartment."
Umm... yeah... this is not a bedroom. Nowhere to put a bed, and no closet pretty much seals the deal there. But, it was a great storage room, and we needed the space!

Here is the storage room right before we moved.... You definitely had to do some serious
maneuvering to get in there.

This is our nasty bathroom "before-ish". We cleaned the shower 3 times I think before we used it. We also got a new toilet seat (which I had to put on!). At first we had a mat in the shower because there was no way I was standing on that floor, but due to this one particular plumbing problem, we had to throw it out (I'll leave that up to your imaginations... whatever you're thinking it's probably right). So from then on we wore flip flops in the shower.

Here is the bathroom "after." I don't feel much like there was a real before and after, but we kept it clean the best we could.

A few decorations... Didn't get to putting pics in those frames either.

Gotta have the clorox wipes handy in this joint!

I don't have any pictures of the kitchen before we moved in... Trust me, you should be glad I don't! We were so so glad to get that rug from Mick and Becki. SOOO GLAD! We didn't have a dishwasher, and washing dishes by hand got old real quick. Glad we're done with that.

Alright, here's where the gross part starts. This kitchen counter was SO GROSS when we moved in. All the spaced in between the tiles were FILLED with dirt, and the sink was almost totally brown. We failed to notice just how bad it was when we went to look at it the first time. So after 3 hours of serious labor, we got it all clean, but I still never trusted it. I never put food on the counter and we bought rubber mats to put in the bottom of the sinks.

We were packed so full in there! There was nowhere to put our microwave and toaster, so we had to just pile them on top of the fridge, haha. At least we got a kick out of it. That toaster is gigantic!

Love that magnet board. I forgot to mention earlier that we have such great relatives! While we were on our honeymoon, some of Brigham's family came and did some cleaning and brought us some great things that we needed! They were real life savers! I was dreading going home to a dirty house and thanks to them, I didn't have to!

Bedroom before we put stuff away. That was one nice thing about the apartment was that it was a really good sized room. And yeah, this mess didn't work for me for very long. This was the first room that got put away.

Bedroom after... photo is kind of dark, sorry.

This was my very favorite. Like most girls, I think I underestimated the quantity of clothes that I owned and took up most of the closet and all of the dresser. So we had to go ghetto style and buy these for Brig to put some of his clothes in. They were stuffed to the brim! Good memories though!

Tiny closet.

And here is the scariest room of all time, as promised! Yeah, they called this the "laundry room." More like dark dungeon of hell! Sorry about the language. We did pretty much everything in our power to avoid doing laundry in this room. The whole having snoop at our house thing didn't really work out (for anyone who knows snoop, that shouldn't be any kind of surprise) and Brig would have to go up to his parents to take care of the dogs every day anyways, so I usually just sent the laundry with him. And I was very grateful for that!

This is just a funny photo of all the boxes and garbage that we had when we put away our gifts. Pretty massive stack of boxes I'd say!
I'm going to go ahead and end this by being very typical and saying that as gross as the apartment was, it was a little sad for me to leave it. Not too sad, but a little. After all, it was our first apartment and I like to be sentimental sometimes. Hopefully someday we'll be able to laugh about the grossness and be a little more grateful for the nice things that we have! We're glad to be living in a clean place! Although living with parents is not idea, we're very grateful to have family so close, that we can go to in a time of dire need! Mick and Becki have been great, and I am very thankful to have married into such a loving and caring family.
Oh, first apartments, such great memories. I know what you mean. As gross as they can be and as glad as you are to leave them, it's a little sad because you're leaving behind your first memories together. Our first apartment seamed great at first. Then came the infestation. Twice I woke up with centipedes on my face! What a nightmare. I was so relieved to leave it. But it was kind of sad.
ReplyDeleteI believe you that the apartment was gross, but the pictures do not do the grossness justice. It actually looks pretty cute all cleaned up! I guess if you had posted pictures of the, ahem, 'plumbing problems' I might see it as grosser.
